Welcome to Plot to Plate. Whether you enjoy growing your own food, cooking it or simply eating it, there should be something of interest here for you. I enjoy doing the lot, from plot to plate.

My wife Sue and I took on a plot at our local allotments in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight late in 2005. It was derelict, overgrown with grass, weeds and brambles and looked as if it wouldn't even produce a potato. It took all of that winter and the following spring to clear and there were times when we felt like giving in. I'm so glad we didn't. The satisfaction of watching the crops flourish (mostly) and the fun, friendship and advice we received from out fellow allotmenteers was worth every back breaking minute. I even grew to love beetroot - but that's another story.........

We're not experts, we're enthusiasts who just want to share experiences, growing tips and recipes with others. I hope you enjoy the site. Be sure to let me know what you think. I'll be updating frequently, so check back often!

The "Chickens Out" Campaign

I don't know if you've been watching Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstalls' series of programmes, Hughs Chicken Run, recently which shows in graphic detail how inhumane the raising of factory birds really is and seeks to persuade us to buy and eat only free range birds. If you missed it, watch out for the re-run. It's an enlightening, moving and thought provoking experience.

Sue and I decided some time ago that eating free range was the only moral stance we felt we could take over this issue. We're not trying to preach and at the end of the day each of us has to make up our own minds about whether or not we can accept the reality of factory produced birds. We would however, encourage you to find out more about the subject. We've decided to do our little bit by signing up for the campaign via programmes website, and adding the counter below which shows how many other folk have joined in Hughs' "Chicken Out" campaign. Why not click the link and take a look.
