We got off to a great start this year, spending a lot of time down at the plot and getting most
of the groundwork done that we’ve been talking about for the last year. I am especially pleased now that we’ve
sorted out the paths which are finally edged, straight and parallel! Sue assures me it’s a man thing – meandering
paths were always OK with her. I keep telling her this is supposed to be a productive veg patch not a forest walk!
I’ve built another compost bin at the top of the plot – you can never have enough compost
bins. It’s made out of old pallets and some slotted posts that the allotment association had donated and looks pretty
good to me. I’m going to line it with black plastic to retain the heat once we start to fill it, so that it acts a bit
like a larger version of the plastic compost bins we currently have. They produce really good stuff so the theory should work.
The raspberry bed that we extended a month or too back is now dug and planted with two rows of
raspberries, a row of Tayberries and some blackcurrent bushes, with space left for a couple of crowns of rhubarb.

Sue has been allocated her space for a cutting garden and we look forward to a fantastic display of flowers
throughout the summer. The bed is huge – I’m a generous chap - but it will be used for herbs as well as flowers
and it will save me buying the weekly bouquet for the summer. All in all then, a good investment. The bed even has an obelisk
for roses so it’s all getting very posh.
We’ve got most of our seeds for the coming season and can’t wait to start sowing. It
won’t be long before the shallots and broad beans can go in so we won’t have to be patient for too much longer.
We also bought some onion sets from a local garden centre which were cheap as chips and, as they say there is going to be
a shortage of onions in the shops due to the bad summer last year, they may well turn out to be a precious crop.
